Does the 2019 Honda Civic Have Blind Spot Monitoring?

Does the 2019 Honda Civic Have Blind Spot Monitoring?

GCH Automotive |

Not in the usual sense. The 2019 Honda Civic sedan and coupe did not include radar blind spot warning on either side. EX, EX-L and Touring trims instead have Honda LaneWatch, a camera that shows the right-hand side of the car on the center screen. The LX and Sport have neither.

Does the 2019 Honda Civic have blind spot monitoring? LaneWatch vs. radar BSM

Honda's 2019 Civic launch materials made Honda Sensing standard on every sedan and coupe. That suite covers collision mitigation braking, lane keeping, road departure mitigation and adaptive cruise control. It does not include a blind spot warning system. What Honda offered on EX and higher trims was LaneWatch, which it describes as an exclusive side-view camera.

The two technologies solve the problem differently:

  • LaneWatch uses a camera under the passenger mirror. Signal right, or press the button on the end of the turn-signal stalk, and the screen shows about 80 degrees of the right-rear roadway, roughly four times what the mirror shows. You have to look at the screen, and it covers the right side only.
  • Radar blind spot detection monitors both rear corners continuously and alerts you, so you don't need to look away from the road to notice a car beside you.

So a 2019 Civic driver merging left gets no electronic help from the factory, regardless of trim.

How to identify what your Civic has

  1. Look under the passenger mirror. A small camera lens means LaneWatch (EX and above).
  2. Look at the mirror glass. No warning indicator means no radar blind spot system.
  3. Check your trim. LX and Sport models have no side-view camera and no blind spot warning.

Adding radar blind spot detection to a 2019 Civic

GCH's Authentic OEM BlindSpot Detection with Cross Traffic Detection adds what the factory did not: radar coverage of both rear corners. According to the listing, the system:

  • Is built from original equipment components and mounts its radar behind a plastic bumper fascia
  • Includes cross traffic detection, which checks left and right of the bumper while reversing
  • Is offered in a CAN version, which reads reverse, turn-signal and speed data from the vehicle network, and a VSS version, which connects to the vehicle speed signal wire

On an EX or above, the kit complements LaneWatch rather than replacing it. Contact GCH with your VIN to confirm the correct version before ordering.

FAQ

Is LaneWatch the same as blind spot monitoring?

No. LaneWatch is a right-side camera view you check on the screen. Blind spot monitoring is a sensor system that warns you about vehicles on both sides.

Does Honda Sensing include blind spot warning on the 2019 Civic?

No. Honda's feature list for 2019 Honda Sensing doesn't include it.
